Example 2: Danish Ambassador harassed in the United States
As it is quite normal here in Denmark a diplomat drove his car after some drinks. In Copenhagen the police often functions as drivers for foreign diplomatic staff when they have too much to drink and are found behind their own wheels.
It is a price every country has to pay because keeping diplomatic connections are important in a globalized world. Denmark run a huge aid-industry and often the permission to enter a country and help people depend on the ability to treat their diplomatic staff as kings.
So drunk driving is ignored and tickets are never paid.
That's why the development in the United States is odd and totally unacceptable. He paid his fine and has to go without drivers license for three months. I know that United States is the only remaining superpower in the world, but surely it doesn't mean that they can ignore diplomatic traditions totally?
I will recommend that Denmark consider if diplomatic presence is needed at all.
